Chapter Twenty-Four

Confidence Building

By the time Friday night rolled around, there had been enough of an absence to make them both eager to see each other. When Jack pulled into the driveway to pick Maggie up, he saw her peeking out the window. But she still made him wait before answering the door. As soon as she opened it, he held out a bright red box of mixed chocolates. “These are for you; a token of my affection.”

She laughed at his joke and shoved his shoulder. “You love tempting me, don’t you?”

His arm whisked around her waist and brought her close. “Is it working?”

“What do you think?”

He brought his head close, as if to kiss her, but stopped inches from her lips to say, “I’ve always enjoyed a challenge.” Then he was kissing her stupid. When he finally came up for air, his forehead rested against hers. To keep her standing, he held her until her eyes opened and her fists released their grip on his shirt.

His voice was husky as he warned, “Let’s get out of here before I drag you to bed.”

They had dinner and spent the evening shopping for a gift for his mother’s birthday. It gave him a chance to watch the things she was drawn to. She chose a ring. The two center birthstones represented his parents, and on either side were those of their two sons. Jack was pleased with her sentimentality of the family unit, though not surprised. He would pick it up next week.

They closed the evening out by sitting on the porch swing at her house talking about their childhood as they enjoyed the view of the ocean.
